Faculty of the
UNH Violin Craftsmanship Institute

In addition to master violin maker Karl Roy, who has headed the university's Violin Craftsmanship Institute for the past 27 years, faculty members for the summer workshops this year included:

Horst Kloss, a master violin maker who has a shop in Boston, where he specializes in the repair and restoration of historic instruments and bows. He is also responsible for maintaining the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection of historic stringed instruments.

Lynn Hannings, an authority on bow making in the French tradition. Bows produced in her shop in Pownal, Maine, are used by professional musicians around the world. In 1989, she received a Fulbright Scholarship to study advanced bow making in Paris with Bernard Millant, the world's leading authority on French bow making.

George Rubino, a master violin maker who has been a teaching assistant at the institute for many years. He is a full-time bow maker, specializing in double-bass bows, and he teaches double bass at Dartmouth College.

Thurmond Knight, who began studying violin building with Karl Roy in 1986. He is a cellist with the Twilight String Quartet and played with the Vermont Philharmonic for many years. He also builds instruments in his own shop in Vermont, specializing in cellos.
