Capsized, Sailing Team Plans To Rebuild

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn MySpace E-mail Favorite More

When UNH Sailing Team members got a call on the night of March 3 with the news that their boathouse was on fire, they rushed to Mendum's Pond in Barrington, N.H. There they found the building and the club's 55-boat fleet burning to the ground in a fire so hot that their tools and five engines melted. "It was horrific," recalls coach Diana Weidenbacker, who says the loss is valued at $600,000, only a small fraction of which is covered by insurance. The cause was arson, according to the state fire marshal's office; the case is still under investigation. Community and corporate support—including the loan of eight FJ sailboats from LaserPerformance—have helped the team start to rebuild.
