Signs of the Times Once upon a time, Durham had no traffic lights. Then came the Route 4 bypass in the early '60s and the town's first light at Madbury Road. Last spring, the town's fourth and newest set of traffic lights was installed at the intersection of Route 108 and Main Street, not far from the stretch of filling stations called Gasoline Alley. The lights were part of a project that included granite-edged sidewalks and flower beds. More than 17,000 cars pass through the intersection daily, according to project director Lynn Mayville '71, and the new signals and turn lanes will help reduce traffic accidents.
