Some things never change. The young woman whose feet preferred grass to fashion during the 1955 commencement exercises could probably find a souldmate (or solemate) in this year's ceremony. In 1955, 549 soon-to-be-alumni listened to Arthur Felmming, director of the Office of Defense Mobilization, speak on "Our Common Responsibility." This year, on a rainy day in May, nearly 2,600 students heard a commencement address given by Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space.
