Many people think it's great to have a lawyer in the family.

In April, the University of New Hampshire added, in essence, a lawyer to the UNH family when the university and Franklin Pierce Law Center signed an affiliation agreement.

At the signing ceremony, Gov. John Lynch '74 said the partnership is great for both institutions and "particularly good for the state of New Hampshire." Franklin Pierce Law Center will be named the University of New Hampshire School of Law pending approval of the affiliation by the American Bar Association and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. A formal merger is expected within three to five years.

The affiliation calls for the formation of two integration committees—academic and administrative—to make recommendations for how best to maximize the benefits of the two schools coming together. Franklin Pierce is expected to remain at its current location in Concord, N.H., although there will probably be an office in Durham.

Pierce Law is known as a global leader in innovative legal education. Its internationally-renowned intellectual property program boasts one of the largest full-time faculties in the field, a broad range of curricular offerings and the only academic intellectual property library in the nation. It's also known for its Social Justice Institute, wide range of clinics and externships and the Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program.
