Campus Currents Two Million-Dollar GiftsTwo $1 million gifts to the UNH Athletics program were announced this spring. Thomas P. Putnam, former chairman of the Markem Corp., donated a $1 million leadership gift to launch the UNH ski team's fundraising campaign. The gift will help fund scholarships, coaches' salaries and equipment for the team. Putnam skied for UNH in the mid-1960s before leaving the university to join the U.S. Army. Edward A. Fish '58, a longtime benefactor to UNH, gave $1 million to initiate Phase 1 of the UNH stadium project. Over the summer, a new state-of-the-art "FieldTurf" playing surface will be installed in time for football training camp. Fish, the former owner and president of Suffolk Construction Co. in Boston, played both hockey and football at UNH. In other good news for UNH Athletics, Ricky Santos '08, winner of last year's Walter Payton Award, was picked as the No. 1 college quarterback in the nation by The Sports Network.
