Class Notes Opener Photo OutskirtsThis photo appeared in a 1920 brochure, "Popular Winter Sports on the Campus," aimed at prospective students. The location is not identified, but the young women could have been on Beech Hill, near present-day Route 4 and Madbury Road, where a wooden ski jump had been built by fraternity brothers. Wearing skirts for skiing was on its way out: by the end of the decade, women college students in Durham would be wearing baggy woolen knickers just like the men. See "Ski Moguls" for a story on two present-day alumnae skiers. Larger image (copyrighted) blog comments powered by Disqus |
