When he competes in Vancouver in February, cross-country skier Robel Teklemariam '97 will be the sole athlete representing Ethiopia at the Winter Olympics—for the second time. Born in Addis Ababa, Teklemariam came to the U.S. at age 9 when his mother took a job at the U.N. He was introduced to skiing at a small boarding school in Lake Placid, N.Y. At UNH, he was on the cross-country team and ranked in the top 30 nationally. Teklemariam's hope is that more Ethiopians will compete in winter sports. "After Turin, I met a lot of Ethiopian skiers, but so far none of them are racers," he says. For Teklemariam's blog and videos, visit his Facebook page or http://5dreams.panasonic.net/.
