Class Notes Opener Photo

Before there was a national championship dressage team (UNH Magazine, Spring 2009), there was UNH's first riding club, the Whips, organized in December 1944 by physical education professor Evelyn Browne '62G, third from right, front row, in this photo in the 1945 Granite. Ruth Brown Martsolf '45 of Bothell, Wash., fourth from left in the same row, writes that the students learned to "muck out the stalls and groom the horses at the barn, but we had no idea our first Gymkhana and a few game ribbons would morph into such an impressive group of equine achievers in the future!" Martsolf recalls being "scolded roundly" by Browne after taking Blaze, "my wonder horse, out for a winter run during Christmas holidays. It's really great to know we and Evelyn Browne started the basics of such an excellent equine skills program."
