Sidebar: How to visit Great Bay


Great Bay includes 4,471 acres of tidal waters and mudflats and 48 miles of shoreline, as well as 800 protected acres of salt marshes, tidal creeks, woodlands, and open fields. The public can visit Great Bay at three places:

--Adams Point in Durham is the site of UNH's Jackson Estuarine Research Laboratory, offers bird-watching and quiet strolling by the bay along a self-guided interpretive trail. Contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department: 868-1095.

--At Sandy Point in Stratham a 1,600-foot boardwalk and an indoor interpretive center introduce visitors to the salt-marsh habitat of Great Bay. (The graded gravel path and boardwalk are accessible to those wiht limited mobility.) Contact the Discovery Center: 778-0015.

--The Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Portsmouth, once part of Pease Air Force Base, has 6.5 miles of shoreline on Great Bay. Contact the US Fish and Wildlife Service: 431-7511.
