John W. Hatch, a renowned New England artist and professor emeritus at UNH, died in Exeter, N.H., on Aug. 6, 1998. He was 78.

Hatch graduated from Massachusetts College of the Arts in 1941, and then joined the U.S. Army Engineers as an aerial photo topographer. After World War II, he earned a B.F.A. and M.F.A. at Yale University. In 1949, he joined the UNH art department faculty, where he taught for 36 years. A fellowship fund was created in 1996 in his honor, and in 1997, an exhibition of his work, called "A Sense of Place," was held at the University Art Gallery.

Honored last year with a Governor's Award in the Arts as a "Living Treasure," Hatch was highly respected for his portraits and landscapes. He was active in local history and conservation groups, and was an avid sailor and hiker.

He is survived by his wife, Maryanna Eckman Hatch, two daughters, Johanna Schwartz and Rebecca Gratwick, and a granddaughter.


Phyllis Deveneau Michelfelder, founder of Wayside House, died July 18, 1998.

Mrs. Michelfelder, a college administrator from 1947 to 1972, established Wayside House in 1974 after her own successful treatment for addiction to alcohol. The center, located in Delray Beach, Fla., is open to women who are without funds or medical insurance. In 1995, Mrs. Michelfelder was awarded the Susan B. Anthony Award for Outstanding Feminist from the Palm Beach County chapter of the National Organization for Women. She received a B.A. degree in English and psychology from UNH and a master's degree in counseling psychology from Nova University.

She is survived by her sister, Marion Deveneau Stevens '48, and brother Nelson E. Deveneau, and their families.


Charles H.J. Breeding '49, '66G, Thompson School of Applied Science professor emeritus of soil science, died July 15, 1998 in Reading, Penn.

During World War II, Breeding served as a Seabee in the South Pacific, and returned to finish his B.S. degree, and later, a master's degree in natural resources at UNH. In 1963, he joined the Thompson School faculty, where he taught until his retirement in 1980. Breeding was a competitive master swimmer, life-long conservationist and active volunteer.

He is survived by his wife, June Fite Breeding, three daughters, Judith Watt, Patricia Breeding '66, and Susan Breeding, a stepdaughter, Gretchen Leininger, a stepson, Jan Van Voorhis, and three stepgrandchildren.

Long-time Cooperative Extension dairy agent Ernest A. George '51 died June 19, 1998.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, George was chair of the 4-H Foundation of New Hampshire, Inc. from 1987 to 1996. He was also a strong supporter of the New Hampshire 4-H youth exchange program. A fund benefiting the exchange program has been set up in his memory. Contributions may be sent to the Ben Davis Fund, UNH Cooperative Extension, 278 Mast Road, Durham, NH 03824.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Bailey George '50; two sons, Lawrence George '75 and James George '84; and two daughters, Carol George Farley '79 and Susan George Cummings.


Irving E. Rogers Jr., a patron of many University projects and a strong supporter of the UNH Parents Fund, died May 21, 1998. He was 68.

Rogers, publisher of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Eagle-Tribune newspaper in Lawrence, Mass., was the third generation in his family to run the Eagle-Tribune newspaper. A graduate of Norwich University and the Bentley School, he was a noted civic volunteer and philanthropist.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; sons Irving E. "Chip" Rogers III '83 and Stephen H. Rogers '88; two daughters, Deborah Rogers Doherty '79 and Martha R. Scully; a brother, Alexander H. Rogers II, and seven grandchildren.
